Book a Weekly Sailing Tour From Corfu to Ithaka – Vathi
To start with, Vathi is the capital and the main port of Ithaca since the 16th century. This picturesque village, the largest on the island, is built amphitheatrically around a deep and protected bay with a narrow entrance. Today it has 2000 inhabitants.
The 1953 earthquakes had almost destroyed the village, leaving only a few buildings standing. Fortunately, most of the destroyed Venetian buildings were rebuilt by the inhabitants. Vathi is considered a traditional listed settlement and any construction that is not similar to the traditional architectural style and colour is prohibited by a law passed in 1978.
Some of the many interesting sights of Vathi are the beautiful houses of C. Karavia and G. Dracoulis, one of the richest families of Vathi, the churches of Agios Georgios, the beautiful renovated cathedral dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, which has a beautiful wooden carved iconostasis, the Archaeological Museum which houses a collection of various finds from the Geometric, Mycenaean and Corinthian periods, and the house where Odysseus Androutsos, the Greek hero of the War of Independence, was born.
As the capital of Ithaca, Vathi is the administrative, cultural and commercial centre of the island. There you can find schools, a sports stadium, a medical centre, a theatre, a library and branches of many banks.
In Vathi there is also a yachting service station for refueling as well as service & petrol stations for cars and motorcycles. Several hotels and many rooms to let are also available in the village. A vast range of taverns, cafés, pubs, and nightclubs await to introduce you to the local cuisine and entertainment.
